Reading Log Term 2
Title of the Book:All Creatures Great and Small Author:James Herriot Publisher:Open Road Media Class: 10E Subject: English Name: Christabelle Delfiona Taran (Fiona) Date: 10/10/2018 PRE READING Authors’ life: James Herriot was a British veterinarian and author born on October 3rd, 1916, in Sunderland, England. Named James Alfred Wight, his parents raised him in Glasgow, Scotland. He attended veterinary college in 1933 and worked as a well-respected veterinarian for many decades. He created James Herriot as a pen name and published stories about his experiences as a country vet. Historical Background: The book of All Creatures Great and Small is an episodic bookMeaning that every chapter in the novel has a short story (synopsis) within as the story continues. So that every chapter has different topic or themes, it could be romantic, and the next chapter could be about his personal life and later on could be about biology. Cultural Background: As a vet, veterinarians work and task is to take care the (healthcare) animals, like pets, zoo animals based on what they needed. That’s why, vets’ role/job is very needed in today’s era. In the novel itself, Herriot tends to mostly help horses and dogs. Social Background: During his life time, in total, he (James Herriot) has wrote 15 books. The novels he has created has been sold to 50 million copies in 20 countries. Even until today his books are still well known in the public eye and All Creatures Great and Small is actually one of his well-known novels (a classic). His novels also have been changed into television shows and movies throughout the years. Author’s genre/theme/voice/ style based on media review (I never read any of his books): All creatures great and small is going to be my first James Herriot’s novel. But, based on the media and review by the readers, many people enjoyed reading his books which makes it make sense why his novels are still well known until this day. People mentioned that he has his own writing style which makes his novel unique. One of the examples is that he changes the details and names of the owners of the pets and the farmers. I think the story will be about: Based on the cover, the author, the illustration, and the synopsis, I can predict the story. I think that the story will be a mixture of the authors experience/ life, James Herriot during his work life as a veterinary surgeon. The vet will have to deal with different/ various kinds of animals like farm animals, pets, for example; horses, pigs, cows, and many more. With him has to face with problems and difficulties in order to reach his achievements as a veterinarian. But not only that it evolves on his work life, but maybe his personal life like love life. WHILE READING I stop and predict what will happen next in the story:

AFTER READING Story Messages:
I summarize and synthesize the story: James Herriot is a young man that wanted to be a veterinary surgeon. James Herriot started his work life as a veterinary surgeon as an assistant of Siegfried Farnon. Thus, he moved into Farnon’s house. Throughout his work life experience, Herriot had to examine various types of animals including horses, pigs, cows, cats and dogs to heal them. He also deal with many conflicts that struggled him, as many of his clients/close people gave him a hard time. Then, Herriot meet Helen, a girl who he quickly interested in. Chapters has passed and Herriot moves from the interested phase to the fall in love phase. Until in the end, He asked Helen to marry him by the permission of Helen’s dad even at first he felt if he wasn’t ready yet. At the end, they got married and spend their honeymoon at the Allen’s. I identify the Habits of Empowerment in the story- The story teaches me to: This story relates to many habits of empowerment, as this story teaches me to respect not only human and animals. It also teaches me to listen with heart and mind which means when Herriot listens to other people’s opinion. Other than that, it also teaches me to take charge and be accountable, meaning that Herriot takes charge in taking care of the animals. Lastly, I also learned to always optimize my potential and do my best in doing tasks. MY REFLECTION: After reading the story, I decided to: read other novels in the upcoming future. Not only novels that is written by James Herriot but other novels written by many other authors. He, James Herriot has a very unique style of writing and as he applied many other concepts like biology/geography/history, I also learn so many things from reading this novel. Even though there are a lot of advanced vocabulary words, which makes the novel hard to understand, it definitely could help me to improve my English skills. Due to last term's outcome regarding non fiction writing, I posted my Global Citizenship report which is about the plastic pollution issue as my evidence.
If you were not prepared for a Literature Circle, how did it affect other members of your group?
If other members of your group were not prepared for a Literature Circle, how did it affect you? (This question evaluates learner outcomes.) As literature circle is a group discussion and each member has its own role, every person in the group has its own “role” in the discussion itself, therefore they discuss different things. For example, word wizard, they should find words/vocabularies that seemed hard and find the definition. That’s why, every time it’s the time for a literature circle, all the members should be so that every member in the group can understand and get every of the information that is needed from each role. If I’m not prepared, other members will not get a complete information that is needed from each role. For word wizard for example, they wont get the definition when they actually can. It works the same way if other members of the group are not prepared, it will affect me because I won’t get any of their information, only mine, however we should find a solution for it and do critical thinking. Most of the times, the solution is that we preapred a while for 5-10 minutes. 1. Explain, in your own words, how to use context clues to determine the meaning of a word you encounter while reading. Give a detailed example. (long)
Ever heard about context clues? Context clues are often found by us, readers when the author gives a clue to help us as a reader to define an usual/ difficult word. The “clue” itself could be found in the same sentence or it could be in the next sentence. The clue could be an synonym, antonym, definition, example or inference from the word itself. For example: "The student was suffering from anxiety, for instance, when he first saw the test, he began to tremble." By using the word “for instance” it indicates as an example clues. 2. Explain the difference between an Independent and a dependent clause. How can you tell the difference? Give examples. (long) From the word itself, we can see how these 2 clause are different, the other one is “independent” and the other word is “dependent”. However, both of these clauses contains a subject and verb, but, a “dependent” clause is not complete that’s why it can’t stand by its own to be a sentence, therefore it needs to be attached to an independent clause so that it can form a sentence. Examples:
3. Explain the difference between adjective and adverbial clauses. Give examples of each. Do not use examples used by your teacher in class. (long). A clause is a group of subject and verb, but there are many types of clauses, adjective and adverbial clauses. Adjective clauses is modifying the verbs and verbs phases, it answers question that relates to a purpose, condition, location and things that help describing the sentence. While adverbial clauses is modifying the nouns and pronouns. Examples:
1: List the chapters of All Creatures Great and Small that you read. (short)
For this term we were ask to read a novel called "All Creatures Great and Small" by James Herriot, the chapters that I read was chapter 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 18, 34, 42, 65, 66, 67. 2: Describe the chapters that you enjoyed the most or found most interesting. What did you enjoy or find interesting about those chapters? (long) When reading the novel, I enjoyed the chapters, not only in the beginning part, but as the novel continues to the middle, and in the end, as along the way more characters are introduced and how every characters has a different connection or relation with Herriot. The characters has different humours and different role throughout the novel but every characters plays a role to make the story continue. Not only there are a lot of characters that are introduced, but there are also more animals that he had to handle in his work. During his work, he handled different types of animals like horses, but most of them are farm animals. It also shows his patience with animals. 3: What did you learn about geography from reading All Creatures and The Interlopers? (long) When reading the novel, we can see there are a lot of locations and geography that we meet along the story. We can see how geography plays an important role in a story because geography shows the location of the story itself, it might be in the highlands, short, or even in the middle. As he is a vet, he has to deal with his clients that has different kind of animals and different kind of locations, depending on the client itself, that’s why he moves from one place to another place a lot. One of the geography in the story is located in Europe, more accurately in the Central and Eastern Europe, on the Carpathian mountain and inside the forest. 4: Describe the different kinds of conflict that you learned about this term, and give examples of these types of conflicts in the stories. You may not use examples from Chapters 1-3. (long) In this term, we learned different types of conflict, there are:
5: What did you learn about history from All Creatures? (long) Throughout the story in the novel we can actually see how vet works back in the day and how it is more old-school since back then since there are less technology and tools that we can see today. That’s why, instead, Herirot and the other vets itself, they have to find out other different ways to do surgery on the animals. That’s why, vet industry has change overtime and over the years. 6: What did you learn about Biology or other Science from All Creatures? (long) Actually the story of the novel evolves a lot in biology since the story explains Herriot’s journey during his period before being a vet until he succeed in being a vet because in the story we can see how Herriot deals with different kind of animals, we can learn biology from it. I can learn how he uses new medicals, body parts of animals, ways/process of an animal giving birth and new vocabularies that might be in a Latin name or even not in latin. Most of the new vocabularies is a part of an organ or inside the body. 7: Describe instances of good and bad leadership that you observed in the novel. (long) Throughout the story, we can see two different types of leadership, a good one and a bad one. The good one shows that he/she manage his/her life even when he/she have to deal with a hard situation that might turn his/her life down, and in the story, the good leadership is Herriot himself. We can see that in the story he has to deal with different types of conflict, not only related to his work, but also conflict that’s related to his love life, social life and many different types, but despite all of the things that he had to deal, he’s still able to manage and balance his life. While bad leadership is the opposite of a good leadership, they aren’t able to manage his/her life even when he/she have to deal with a hard situation, so instead, he/she lets others down, and it is Mr. Farnon. We can see how Mr. Farnon likes to underestimate Herriot with his works and skills that he has which makes Herriot down. 8: Describe connections that you have made between the novel and your life. (long) As this story revolves around animals, growing up, I had a lot of animals in my house, from dogs, turtles, birds and many other different types of animals. That’s why I can understand Herriot’s feeling when taking care of the animals when they are sick and how they need help. I love things that are related to any thing that has a positive contribution and making a good impact to the animals, which is being a vet. I’m also planning of maybe that one day I could become a doctor, a vet more specifically , but it is still a plan. 9: Explain the meanings of 5 vocabulary terms that you learned from reading All Creatures or The Interlopers which you found most interesting. (long) When reading the story, the vocabulary that I find interesting are: Beckoning: make a gesture with the hand, arm, or head to encourage someone to come nearer or follow. Gobbets: a piece or lump of flesh, food, or other matter. Alcove:a recess, typically in the wall of a room or of a garden. Wrenched:pull or twist (someone or something) suddenly and violently. Rickety: (of a structure or piece of equipment) poorly made and likely to collapse. I found this 5 vocabulary terms interesting because I usually used a different word/ synonym of it to use these words because I find it more easier and when reading the novel, that’s the first time that I’ve ever see the word or even heard it. That’s why when I find and search the meaning of it, i thought it was going to be a hard definition, eventually not, it turned out to be just the word that I rarely hear or use in my daily basis. . 10. List vocabulary terms that you learned this term. (short). In this term I learned many various different types of vocabulary term that I never heard or use before, the vocabulary terms are; steriliser, anaesthetics, embryo tome, confinement, rickety, stodgy, obtruding, and many more.
